The Back Yard – An Untapped Resource for Most

Most of us don’t get to design the homes we live in. We can’t change the plumbing or move the walls around to where we want them, or easily modify its infrastructure in any significant way. It’s not that it can’t be done – it’s just cost prohibitive for most. Contrast that with your backyard. It’s far easier to improve a backyard than your kitchen or your homes floor plan. There’s a vast untapped potential present in most backyards inherently I’ve found.

In terms of simple maintenance it’s just the cost of your effort – and some commodity class tools such as lawn mowers, weed eaters, hedge trimmers, and so on. It’s a small commitment once made – typically a couple of hours per week at most.

That’s just the beginning too. Ones creative juices can really get flowing with the diversity of decorative and furniture possibilities for today’s backyards. You don’t have to spend thousands of dollars necessarily either. Contrast that with a kitchen remodel, or simply having the inside of your house painted. Either project would be far more expensive yet have much less impact on your living space or would be nearly as impressive to family, friends, and neighbors. Don’t misunderstand me here. There are indeed many very expensive things you can do to a backyard such as in-ground swimming pools, patio installations, elaborate landscaping and so forth. My point is simply that a well arranged table and chairs with an umbrella possibly – or maybe even a chaise lounge or an attractive chiminea will comfortably and inexpensively grow your homes living space. Your backyard is a part of your home after all. Why not treat it as such?

The types of backyard improvements available are numerous to say the least.
Typical improvement projects include but are not limited to:

• Furniture (i.e. chaise loungers, tables, umbrellas, chimineas, etc.)
• Utility items (i.e. charcoal grills, firepits, yard lights, outdoor speaker systems, etc.)
• Decorum items (i.e. wind chimes & socks, bird houses and feeders, tiki torches, ponds, fountains, etc.)
• Fun & entertainment items (i.e. Trampolines, croquet, badminton, etc.)

The next time you consider an ‘around the house’ project take a moment or two to gaze out into your backyard and envision the possibilities. Whether it’s just a table here or there or a vigorous maintenance effort or landscaping project – it’s sure to be a project you’ll be able to get your fingers around that won’t break the bank. Since most backyard projects are ‘do it yourselfers’, you’ll be amazed and ultimately proud of what you can accomplish when your creativity is allowed to flourish.

There is also a payback beyond comfort and pride. It’s an equity builder that can substantially increase your home’s value if done well. If you’re considering selling your home, there’s no quicker and easier way to make it look better from the outside. Just ask any realtor. Backyard stewardship does have its rewards after all.
