Dacryocystitis - Causes, Symptoms and TreatmentDefinition Dacryocystitis is an infection of the lacrimal sac that exist in between the inner corner of the eyelids and the nose.It is a small chamber into which tears discharge. Normally, dacryocystitis results from a blockage of the nasolacrimal duct, which cause the lacrimal sac into the nose.The blocked duct act as a shelter for bacteria and becomes infected.
Tears are made by a tiny organ below the eye called the lacrimal gland, and they are stored in the lacrimal sac. lacrimal sac is connected by a tube to each tear duct, and to the inside of the nose. Tears spill out of the eyes and back into the nose when cry, although the tears entering the nose are not visible.
Dacryocystitis may be swift or continuing . It may be related to a malformation of the tear duct, injury, eye infection, or trauma.In swift infection, the area around the lacrimal sac is painful, red, and swollen. The eye becomes red and watery and oozes pus. Slight pressure put into practice to the lacrimal sac may push pus through the opening at the inner corner of the eye, near the nose. Fever is common in this infection.
Causes This infection is normally caused by blocked dacryostenosis .In the children who are infected by the dacryocystitis, tears are not able to comes out from the lacrimal sac, so they pool in the eye and allow bacteria to multiply,resulting to infection.
There are some causes of a blocked tear duct include are a temporary condition in childrens when there is delayed opening of the tear ducts. This problem normally resolves itself in the first month of life, age-related changes affecting the eyes and eyelids in older people,inflammation of any of the channels that have the tears into the nose, including infections within the nose, any injury to the nose ,a rare side effect of certain treatments & tumor.
SymptomsSymptoms of continuing tear duct blockage are poor severe. Although there may be tearing and perhaps some pus or discharge from the eye, normally there is little or no pain, redness or swelling near the eye & nose .
Typical symptoms of acute tear duct infection include:It affects normally one eye.
Possibility of heavy tearing .
There may be some tenderness, redness, and swelling near the eye & nose .
Pus or discharge from the eye.
Fever
Inflamed bump on the inner corner of the lower eyelid at the inner corner of the eye .
TreatmentsAntibiotic drops or ointments can be used for infants in the infected areas & cured by gently massaging the region between the eye and nose to help open the .
If medical treatment is not efficacious and the problem remains over several months then surgery may be necessary to clear the blockage. A method called dacryocystorhinostomy, in which the narrowed or blocked duct is extended. This normally requires execution of bone that has caused the duct's narrowing. This surgery commonly is done with the help of a laser.
Treatment of dacryocystitis may include such as dilating the puncta,flushing, or irrigating, the tear ducts — a simple procedure that's generally done at the same time when puncta are dilated,antibiotics, if infection is present ,surgery — which can be simple or complex depending on the case of blocked tear ducts .
