It shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone that Disney would eventually master the world of Broadway, but even the most optimistic fan of the Magic Kingdom could not have expected the run away hits the studio has produced in recent years, including The Lion King. Broadway's musical version of Disney's blockbuster brings the timeless fable to life with the brilliant use of props, music, lighting, shadow, acting and sheer drama. Perhaps no other musical in recent memory has touched the souls of so many children and adults as The Lion King.
The plots in the musical and film version are very much alike, even scene-by-scene at some points. But the musical makes the story human, much more than an animated film with talking animals ever could. The animals are still there in the staged production, but the props and costumes used to denote the animals are made from wire and thin cloth with animal prints on them. At first glance they almost look poorly made, but the designers knew exactly what they were doing. The animals here are all figurative, something adult fans of the film have always known, but when the story is told in this fashion, even the kids can understand the metaphor being laid out before them.
The quintessential message from The Lion King is that running away from your problems doesn’t solve them and that growing up means facing challenges. This old fable has never been demonstrated in such a glorious manner. The simple mechanical birds, animals and scene pieces are beautiful and extremely functional. It does take a minute or two to get used to hearing the lines and music we all know by heart in a live, theatre environment, but the adjustment period is short.
The rest of the time you’ll be cheering, crying and singing along with one of the most amazing Broadway shows ever conceived. To say that The Lion King is a modern masterpiece would be a drastic understatement. For some, it has surpassed the emotional experience of the film version, no small feat in itself, and for others, the musical serves as a perfect companion piece to the film, two uniquely special interpretations of a timeless fable. Don’t miss your chance to experience The Lion King on stage because tickets are always going fast for this amazing show!
