Laser Cut Plastics: Making Acrylic Displays More Attractive

Acrylic displays can be made more attractive by fine cutting. Fine cutting of laser can be done with laser. The output of laser required depends on the thickness of the acrylic sheet and the productivity required. Acrylic sheet can be cut faster if laser output is higher. This means efficiency of cutting depends directly on the output of laser. Cutting of acrylic is an easy process. Output of laser can be set to maximum level very easily thereby adjusting speed so that material can be cut easily. Good quality results of cutting can only be achieved selecting parameters carefully. The cut edges are more polished at slower speeds. But if the speed is very less then the resulting cut is wide and extends outwards towards the bottom. In fact this depends upon focal length and focus being set and used. Typical values of focal length should be used for sheets of various thicknesses. Focal length increases with increase of thickness. Thus focal length is directly proportional to thickness of material being cut. Focus should be such that it does not lie on the surface but should be approximately a third of the way inside the material. With speeds that are too high the number of tiny parallel grooves that is striation increase. Faster cutting speeds can be maintained by higher flames. Still gas flow should be set as low as possible to achieve the best possible quality. Acrylic sheets which are being cut can be cast or exhausted. Laser cutting is best suited for cutting of cast acrylic sheets because the cut edges become milky after cutting due to the stresses released in case of extruded acrylic. Also it is necessary to achieve clean adjustment of the beam since the cut edges are not vertical. In case of any astigmatism one should exhibit different angles depending on the direction of displacement. Thus most crucial part is selection of a laser source with good quality beam. Also necessary steps should be taken to avoid reflections of laser beam as beam reflections cause unevenness in cut edges. Because of this special cutting table should be used. It is suggested that dust should be removed properly from surface before cutting as some jobs where a lot of cap material is being removed become coated with dust and residue. This usually happens on pieces that contain large open areas of text or graphics or on jobs where a lot of detail is being removed all across the surface. The dust particles can get into the surface and destroy the task if they are cleaned with a piece of wet or dry cloth. Thus tape should be placed over the entire surface.
